Thanks for continuing to champion my work!! Also, we are a HUGE newsies family, one of my 5 yr olds have an entire ensamble with hat, bag, suspenders etc. we are going to attend the April 5 mass mobilization protest and I explained it to him that we were going to fight for our rights just like the newsies do.

Thank you Sarah for all these thoughts and ideas, for all of us, not just for parents of young kids.

Dogman has some truly wonderful scenes- the scene with Petey and Lil Petey when they look up at the stars and Petey says “Kid the world could never be horrible with you in it” moved me.

I have been very thankful my 8 yo can read Dogman by himself now the last 2 years but the movie made me read some books with him and my 5 yo again.

CARRYIN' THE BANNER (also did I tell you that Griffin and me have a spoof version of newsies called "Nudies" because of reasons I shan't disclose including full spoof lyrics to Carryin' The Banner???)

I went with my then-8-year-old to see the middle schoolers put on Newsies last year, and we still talk about how good it was!

I haven’t gotten my kids passports yet, because we hadn’t traveled with them yet. Now I feel like I should get some, but I’m also afraid to send their documents off to the government.

oof, so much to navigate. i wonder what folks are saying on reddit? might be better now than ever, but def some people are more at risk of surveillance than others (though i believe they are coming for everyone)

Great article, Sarah... thank you. On related topics, including how to talk to your young kids about the hellhole that life in America can be, do you know the book Good Talk, by Mira Jacob? It's a graphic memoir that is both hilarious and heartbreaking. And thought provoking.

I just want to add here that there was a great Broadway production of Newsies about ten years ago, and they filmed a version of it for broadcast. I'm pretty sure you can stream it on Disney+. The dancing is awesome, and they changed the plot so the reporter is a young woman (and romance interest OF COURSE). Medda Larkin is also played by a non-white actress in the filmed production. So it gets a LITTLE broader. Not much! But a little.

rip ann margret, but that's great! yeah we saw a kids theater production with the lady reporter and she made me proud! my professional dream is that i publish something so important that a whole restaurant sings "queen of new york" to me and lifts me up in a chair like it's my bat mitzvah :)
